Requiem for the Annual Performance Review? Not So Fast…

I couldn’t agree more. As an HR professional with over 25 years of experience and spearheading countless revisions to a myriad of performance management tools, I still find myself in situations where managers want to “let someone go” while their annual reviews are outstanding. To me, conducting annual performance reviews provides managers the opportunity to motivate their employees by acknowledging their strengths and successes and to motivate them to improve skill sets that need work. Reviews can also provide support to weaker performance so that if an employee “isn’t working out” you can provide examples and history for justification to make the necessary changes. Annual reviews also provide the employee and opportunity to talk about their progress, their challenges and share ideas and experiences that can be helpful to the success of the organization. In a world of constant texting, email and voicemail, a little face to face conversation about how someone is doing is not a bad thing!
